9th March 1944
At 0300 there was a terrific flash and bang as our barrage balloon was struck by lightning. My cabin was brilliantly lighted despite the fact that the door and windows were shut. We reached Bougie at 1130. The coastal mountains – the highest of which is 8,000 odd feet form an impressive sight for they are covered with snow.
The town presents a similar view to Bȏne. G and I went ashore this evening and took a long walk around the coastal road. It was very interesting and often one could imagine oneself in Devonshire. In the town itself it is pretty eerie the streets being narrow and winding as the town is formed on the side of a hill.
There are many Arabs.
